The son of Senator A. Willis Robertson of Virginia and Gladys W. Robertson, and the grandson of Franklin Pierce Robertson (#139500680), a Baptist minister, and Josephine Ragland Willis Robertson (139500802).

He was born and raised in the college town of Lexington, Virginia. After attending secondary schools in both Lexington and Washington, D.C., he matriculated at Dartmouth College where his schooling was interrupted for service in the United States Navy. Having retired from the Navy with the rank of Lieutenant, he returned to Dartmouth and graduated in 1947.

He was a member of the Order of St. Lazarus, an internationally recognized order of chivalry. Also, he was a member of the Society of Cincinnati, the Nine O'Clocks, the Atlanta Country Club and the Piedmont Driving Club.
