The remarkable earthly life of Ernest Joseph Geer Jr., 93, of Groton, ended peacefully on 26 September 2014 as he went home to be with the Lord.

He was born in New London November 13, 1920, to Ernest and Mary (Silva) Geer. His father was born in Funchal, Portugal.

He married the love of his life, Margaret Joy Sheldon, at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church on July 9, 1942. They enjoyed a two week honeymoon in New York City before he reported for military service. Their life together spanned over 7 decades and is a great love story of two people who shared an adventurous spirit, a zest for life, and a desire to leave their mark on the world. There were moments of tragedy amid the joy, but always resilience.

A plankowner of the USS Charr that was built at EB, he served America honorably in the U.S. Navy as a Radioman in the South Pacific during World War II. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, Ernie worked for Dow Chemical as an electrician and retired as an energy director for TVCCA.

He enjoyed getting up early in the morning, when the world was still and quiet, to go for long power walks. He was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, the New England Patriots, and UConn basketball, and was a lifelong member of the American Legion, Post #9.

Ernie was predeceased in death by his daughter, Margaret Geer Applegate; son, Ernest J. "Skip" Geer III; siblings, Dorothy Perkins, Ethel Durkee, Ruth Philips, Marjorie Fusconi, Norman Geer; and great-granddaughter, Emily Chisholm.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, Oct. 6, at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 10 Huntington St., in New London. Burial will immediately follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, 600 Jefferson Ave., New London.
