John Claude Pennington, age 83, Mountain City, Rout[sic] 3, (Elizabethton Highway) died in Cannon Memorial Hospital, Banner Elk, N.C., Saturday, 7:40 a.m., after a lengthy illness. He was a native of Ashe County, N.C., but had made his home in Johnson County most of his life. He was a retired farmer and a member of the First Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Della Ann Pennington, Mountain City; four sons, Stacy, Cranford, N.J., James, Russell, Ky., Dayton, Philadelphia, Pa., and Bruce, Mountain City; one daughter, Anna Mae Pennington, North Carolina; ten grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were conducted from the Lewis Gentry Funeral Home Chapel Monday, 2:00 p.m. with ministers, Lewis Savage and Leonard Shehan officiating. Burial was in the Sunset Memorial Park.
Pall-bearers[sic] were friends and neighbors.
