He was born before 1760, probably in Virginia. He was first recorded in Chatham County, North Carolina when he purchased land there in 1798.

In the name of God, Amen, The twenty ninth day of April one thousand and eight hundred and two, I, JACOB HARRELL, being sick in body but of good and perfect memory, thanks be to almighty God.
I do order and give and dispose of the same in manner and form following, that is to say, I promise first, I give, bequeath unto my wife ELIZABETH HARRELL all my estate during her life or widowhood, and at her death or marriage. I give unto my daughter CLOE ten shillings. I give unto my son RICHARD HARRELL ten shillings, and all the rest of my property give to my other children hereafter named to be sold and equally divided between them except the colt that my black mare with foal that I give unto my son, WILLIAM HARRELL and equal shares with the rest hereafter named; SARAH HOPSON, DRURY HARRELL, PENNY HARRELL, DEMPSEY HARRELL, EZEKIEL HARRELL and I appoint my loving friends John O. Kelly and O.Vinson, full and sole executors of this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I here unto set my hand the day and date as above written.
