He served in the Civil War as a Private in Co D 1st VT Infantry from May 2, 1861 to May 9, 1861. On Aug 2, 1862 he enlisted in Co G 10th VT Infantry. He was a 2nd Sergeant. He was wounded on May 12, 1864 in Spotsylvania. On Aug 18, 1864 he was reduced in rank. He was mustered out on June 22, 1865.
About 1870 he married Susan Elizabeth McKellips, daughter of Stephen McKellips and Mary B. Martin.
They had a daughter, Gertrude, in Sept 1870. She died of Diphtheria in June 1878. Daughter, Addie M, was born in 1880.
His wife, Susan, died in July 1885.
On Dec 24, 1885 in Haverhill, NH he married Sadie A. Wiles, daughter of Israel Wiles and Ann Perkins.
Their children were Ida Jane, Charles Ernest, Roger Stephen, and George Everett.
Charles preceded Sadie in death. In 1913 in Portland, ME she married Hiram H. Young.
