He was born October 16, 1923, in Marshville, WV, the son of the late Ora Lee Herrod and Valley Mae Thompson Herrod.
On October 23, 1942, he was united in marriage to Wilma Mae Shaffer Herrod, who preceded him in death February 16, 2011.
They were the parents of four children, Rev. Stanley Lee Herrod and wife, Sylviann, Paul L. Herrod and wife, Sharon, Rickey D. Herrod and wife, Beth and Cheryl C. Swiger; 15 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren and one sister, Lois Whiteman.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one son-in-law, Lee Swiger; three grandchildren; nephew, Jimmy Herrod; one sister and five brothers.
Dewain graduated from Bristol High School and worked timber and the saw mill for many years. He was very active in the ministry over the years, teaching Sunday school and serving as deacon of the church at Open Door Tabernacle. He was also the minister at Chiefton Chapel Baptist Church for several years and minister for 45 years total.
Family and friends may call at Greathouse Funeral Home, Rt. 1, Box 59, Salem, on Saturday, June 15, 2013, from 2 - 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Greathouse Funeral Home, Sunday, June 16, 2013, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Stanley Herrod and Rev. Denver Burnside officiating. Interment will follow at Marshville Cemetery.
