Services were held Monday at St. Mary's Church, New Monmouth, for Daniel S Murdoch Jr., 58, a captain in the Police Dept. Capt. Murdoch died Sunday at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. He had suffered a heart attack Wednesday, Sept. 4, on the golf course at the Bamm Hollow Country Club.
Capt. Murdoch was a 30-year veteran of the department and served as captain of the patrol division. He also was a past president of the Policemen's Benevolent Assn., Local 124.' "It's really a great loss to the township," Chief Joseph M. McCarthy said Monday. "He was an excellent police officer."
He was promoted to captain in July 1980 and had held the posts of lieutenant and sergeant. On Oct. 24, 1980, he received a commendation for apprehending an armed bank robber. Murdoch's service with the department was interrupted for three years after a dispute with the Township Committee in the early 1960s. He was reinstated on Feb. 14, 1963. "We're all deeply saddened," McCarthy said. '"I've known him since I was a kid. His son (Ptl. Daniel S.
Murdoch III) will carry on just like his father. When his son joined the force, I'm sure it was one of the proudest days in his life." Capt. Murdoch was born in
Kearny and lived there until moving to Keyport last year. He was a former president of the Middletown Youth Athletic Assn. He also served as a member of the board of directors for Camp Hope, Lincroft, ami helped organize an annual golf tournament and fund-raiser for the camp, which serves retarded children. Capt. Murdoch also helped found the Middletown First Aid Squad, and was a former member of the county Republican Executive Committee, McCarthy said. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church. In addition to his son, Capt. Murdoch is survived by his wife, the former Beatrice Hauser; another son, Craig, Brick; a daughter, Stacey of Red Bank; and a sister, Marion Evans, the township. Capt. Murdoch was buried with full chief's honors at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The John F. Pfleger Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
