Martin was the son of Francis and Henrietta Cartzendafner Blessing, and step-son of Mary Rice Blessing. He was survived by his father, his wife, the former Margaret Kreig, children Martell and Mary, brother David, sister Salome Boyer, and half-sister Nettie Arnold.
A baby son, Earl, died in 1888.
Martin's burial record says that he resided in Brunswick, Maryland and worked as a tollgate keeper.

Martin Blessing, aged 46 years, for some years tollgate keeper on the bridge connecting Brunswick with Virginia, died at his home at Brunswick yesterday morning of typhoid fever. He is survived by his wife and two small children. His remains are to be brought to Frederick for interment.
