Mrs. Eleanor Deaton, aged about 93 years, died last Wednesday in Westminster, at the home of her daughter, Mrs R. U. Powell. Her death was a shock to the family and friends. Though the infirmities of age had crept steadily upon her, still even those nearest her had not realized how closely and silently the end was drawing near and this "Mother in Israel gently fell on sleep," the exact time of the passing of the angel of death not being known. Mrs Deaton was the widow of the late Capt. William Deaton, who died in 1905 at about the same age as his wife. Since Capt. Deaton's death Mrs Deaton had made her home with her daughter, Mrs Powell. Mrs Deaton was the daughter of the late Thos. Alexander. There are but two living members of her family, one brother, Newton Alexander, of Greenville county, and a sister, Mrs M. A. Gibson, of Georgia, though the deceased was the oldest of a family of nine children. Five children survive her - Burt Deaton, of Oconee county; W. H. Deaton, of Arkansas; W. D. Deaton, of Toccoa, Ga.; Mrs B. C. Rothell, of Toccoa, and Mrs R. U. Powell, of Westminster. The remains of the deceased were laid to rest by the side of her husband in the family burying ground on Tugaloo river Thursday afternoon. The deceased was a devout Christian and a consistent member of the Baptist church. We join with many others in extending sympathy to the bereaved ones. Mrs Deaton was on of the few "Confederate Mothers" of Oconee, she having two sons who served under the flag of the Confederacy during the War Between the States.
